An MDVR (mobile digital video recorder) is a recorder installed out of sight in the vehicle that records four or eight external cameras at the same time. With 4G and GPS it sends video, location and AI alerts to your fleet platform, and it takes [ADAS, DSM and BSD cameras](/product-category/accessories/) for driver warnings.

## Who MDVRs are for

MDVRs suit buses, coaches, school buses, heavy trucks, waste-collection and construction vehicles, where the road, the driver, the doors and the blind spots have to be covered together.

## How to choose an MDVR

- **Storage.** The WD10 records to a hard disk of up to 2 TB with an SD card as backup. The WD11 records to two SD cards of up to 256 GB each, and the WD12 to two SD cards, up to 512 GB.
- **Cameras.** The WD12 has four 1080p inputs. The WD10 and WD11 take four cameras at 1080p or eight at 720p.
- **AI functions.** The WD10 and WD11 run one ADAS, one DMS and two BSD channels together. The WD12 runs ADAS and DMS, with BSD as an option.
- **Passenger counting.** The WD10 and WD11 count passengers on one to four doors; the WD11 uses 3D binocular sensors. On the WD10, counting cannot run at the same time as ADAS and DMS.
- **Connectivity.** 4G and Wi-Fi are built into the WD12, with an external GPS and BeiDou module. On the WD10 and WD11, 4G, GPS and Wi-Fi are optional modules.
- **Protocols.** The WD12 supports JT/T 808, JT/T 1078 and GB/T 28181 for third-party platforms.
- **Size and power.** WD10: 161 × 159 × 63 mm, 1.1 kg, 10–36 V, 10 W or less. WD11: 128 × 133 × 42 mm, 0.53 kg, 10–36 V, 10 W or less. WD12: 120 × 120 × 46 mm, 450 g, 9–36 V, under 12 W. All three run from -20 °C to +70 °C.

MDVRs need camera cabling and power and ignition wiring, so we recommend professional installation and supply wiring guidance.

## FAQ

### How many cameras can an MDVR record?

Four or eight. The WD12 records four 1080p cameras. The WD10 and WD11 record four cameras at 1080p or eight at 720p; say which configuration you need when you request a quote.

### Should I choose a hard-disk or an SD-card MDVR?

A hard disk holds more: 2 TB on the WD10 keeps about 260 hours from four 1080p cameras. SD cards have no moving parts: 512 GB on the WD12 keeps about 66 hours from the same four cameras. Both use loop recording.

### Can our own staff install an MDVR?

An experienced auto electrician can. We recommend professional installation because an MDVR needs a cable to every camera, constant and ignition power, and correct placement of the AI cameras. We supply wiring guidance and remote support.
